About the Association

LAST UPDATED: 8th JANUARY 2006

The Association of Sculptors of Victoria grew out of a society of professional sculptors formed in the 1930's. Our membership now represents all modes of sculptural practice - from the professional commissioning artist to the aspiring student. Members cooperate to support sculpture and sculptors in Victoria in a variety of ways including: running and recording exhibitions, maintaining a suppliers and services directory, offering a referral service for sculptors, running members' meetings and workshops and publishing a monthly newsletter.

Mission Statement

This generation of sculptors tend to be independent - even solitary - in their work habits. Indeed Michael Meszaros has been heard to say that an association of sculptors is a contradiction in terms. Still we come together to exhibit work, to share skills and information and to share inspiration. So we have developed our mission statement to define how we support one another in the pursuit of excellence.

We cooperate as an association to advance the practice of sculpture and the reputation and appreciation of sculpture and sculptors in the community. This is regardless of whether or not we make a living from sculpture and regardless of our preferred style or medium. To this end we support artists' moral rights, we advocate a professional attitude to the production and presentation of work and encourage the artistic and intellectual stimulation of interaction amongst artists of all persuasions.

Supporting the Association

The Association is a non-profit organisation and currently the work to run the Association and support its functions in done by volunteers. The main sources of income for the Association are subscriptions from members and commissions on sales of work, either at our exhibitions or through our professional register. The prizes offered at the various exhibitions are administered by the members of the Association and funded mainly by donations.
